Acrobat
Acrobat is a set of applications developed by Adobe to create and read PDF files. The freeware Acrobat Reader is used to read the PDF files. Also see PDF below.

Address
The location of an Internet resource. An email address may be john@yahoo.com, a web address shall look like http://www.funnyjobs.co.au

Animation
Animation is a timed sequence or series of graphic images or frames to give the movement.

ASP (Active Server Page)
A dynamically generated web page, generally using ActiveX scripts. When a browser or a search engine spider requests an ASP page from a server, the server generates the web page with HTML code and gives it to the browser or spider.

Bandwidth
Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data that can travel a section of communication in a given time, usually measured in seconds. Think of a water pipe, then bandwidth represents the cross sectional area of the pipe that determines how much water can flow through it.

A 56K modem can carry maximum 56 KB of information per second. In reality the actual data transfer rate depends on modem (also condition, temperature of the modem itself) as well as line (phone line) capacity, compuer specification and other situations.

Banner
A banner is a graphic image (static, animated, or rich media) that is placed on web sites as an advertisement. Typically a banner is a rectangular advertisement placed on a web page either above, below or on the sides of main content and is linked to the advertiser's own web site.

Bits per second (bps)
The speed at which bits (a unit to measure the amount) of information are transmitted

Bitmap Image (bmp)
A graphic image stored as a specific arrangement of screen dots, or pixels. Web graphics are bitmap images. A graphic which is defined by specifying the colors of dots or pixels which make up the picture.

Browser (or web browser)
The software used to view, manage, and access web pages by interpreting hypertext and hyperlinks. The two most common browsers are Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Web pages often appear differently depending on the brand and version of the browser.

There are many other browsers such as AOL Browser, Opera, NeoPlanet and so on.

CSS
Abbreviation for Cascading Style Sheet, a feature of HTML developed by the W3C. With Cascading Style sheets, both web designers and end users can create style templates (sheet) that specifies how different text elements (paragraphs, headings, hyperlinks, etc.) appear on a web page. Currently, not all browsers express CSS formatting in the same manner.

Database
A way of organizing data. Databases are very useful for storing and organizing data for later retrieval. They are used for managing accounts, managing user information, creating guest books and bulletin boards.

DHTML
Dynamic Hypertext Mark-up Language. DHTML is an HTML extension that allows web pages to react to the users' input, such as displaying a web page based on the type of browser or computer.

Directory
A directory (such as Yahoo directory) depends on people for listings. One important difference between a search engine and a directory is that a directory does not make use of a spider or robot. One of the defining characteristics of a directory is that it is usually divided into categories.

Directory is a database edited by Humans. Web sites are indexed by category. Users can navigate through the categories to locate information. Most directories offer searching options too.

DNS [Domain Name System (Service)]
An Internet system/service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Domain names are alphabetic so they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses.

Domain Name
An unique name that identifies one or more IP addresses. Domain names are used in URLs' to identify particular web sites. Every web site is located by its unique IP address.

Domain Name Extension
Part after the dot in the domain name is a domain name extension. There are many domain name extensions such as .com .net .org .gov .edu .mil .info .web .us .uk .cc .it .mx .ba and many others.

Downloading
Downloading is a process by which users access and save or "pull down" software or other files to their own computers from a remote computer, usually via a modem.

E-Commerce
E-Commerce means conducting business on the Internet. It is mostly referred to buying and selling items on line. That includes payment system.

Flash
Browser independent vector and graphic animation technology owned by Macromedia Inc.. Most browsers support Flash technology.

Freeware
Software distributed for free on the web.

FTP
Stands for File Transfer Protocol. FTP allows you to copy or send files from one computer to another via the Internet.

A typical method used for uploading files (pages) to a hosting server for viewing on the Internet.

GIF
Stands for Graphics Interchange Format. GIF images are the widely used graphic format on the web. GIF images display up to 256 colors. Good for geometric shapes such as maps.

Graphic backgrounds
The bottom-most layer on a web page, usually with either a design or color. A small graphic can be tiled to create a background texture for a web page.

Home page
It is a first page (also referred as an opening page, start page or main page) of a Web site. This would technically be your index page or default page of your directory.

Hosting
Refers to a computer (or a network of computers) which has web server software running on it, and connected to the Internet 24 hours a day. Web site files are stored on these computers's memory.

HTML
Abbreviation for Hypertext Markup Language; a cross-platform text-formatting system for creating web pages, including copy, images, sounds, frames, animation, etc.

Hyperlink
A hyperlink, more commonly called a link, is a connection between one web page to either (a) other web pages on the same web site, or (b) web pages located on another web site. More specifically, a hyperlink is a connection between one point of a hypertext document to another.

When visitor of a web site click with the mouse on a link (object or a text) then he/she is taken to another web page where the link is pointing to. Different types of links are: text links, graphic links, java links, form links.

Image map
An image map is a graphic image containing multiple, clickable hyperlinks on it.

Information page
A static web page that is designed, coded, and written primarily for a target audience but formatted for optimal search engine and directory positioning.

Interactive
A Web page is interactive when it response to the user's action, or in some way can interact with the user dynamically.

Internet
A global network connecting millions of computers. Each Internet computer, called a host, is independent. The Internet is not synonymous with World Wide Web. The Internet and the Web are two related but separate things.

Intranet
A private network that belongs to an organization, accessible only by the organization's members, employees, or others with authorization.

IP [Internet Protocol]
The method or protocol by which data is sent from one computer to another on the Internet. Each computer (known as a host) on the Internet has at least one IP address that uniquely identifies it from all other computers on the Internet.

Java
Java is a programming language, created by Sun Microsystems, which allows small applications to be downloaded into your computer for playback. Java can be used for animation as well as more complex applications such as a calculator.

JavaScript
JavaScript is a scripting language developed by Netscape. JavaScript can make web pages more animated and dynamic in terms of graphics and navigation.

JPEG
Abbreviation for Joint Photographic Experts Group. File format for full-color and black-and-white graphic images. JPEG images allow for more colors than GIF images and are thus good for complex pictures such as photos. You can also change the resolutions, quality and size of files.

Kilobyte (KB)
A kilobyte is a storage unit capable of storing 1,024 bytes of information.

LAN
Local Area Network - A network of computers confined within a small area, such as an office building.

Meta-tag
Meta-tags are HTML tags that can be used to identify the creator of a web page, what HTML specifications a web page follows, the keywords and description of the page, etc. Ulike normal HTML tags, meta tags do not affect how the page is displayed.

Modem
A modem (modulator/demodulator) is the hardware required to connect telephone lines and is essential for dial-up connections to the Internet.

MP3
MP3 is the file extension for MPEG, audio layer 3. Layer 3 is one of three coding schemes (layer 1, layer 2 and layer 3) for the compression of audio signals. MP3 files could be embedded into web site providing music while visitors are viewing the site.

Multimedia
A communication combining text with graphics, page layout, video, audio, animation, and so on.

Newbie
A new Internet user.

Network
A system of connected computers exchanging information with each other. A LAN is a relatively smaller form of a network in comparison to the Internet, a world wide network of computers

When you are not connected to the Internet, you are offline

Online
If you are connected to the Internet, you are online.

Online marketing
Online advertising is done exclusively on the web or through e-mail.

PDF
Portable Document Format. Created by Adobe Systems in its software program Adobe Acrobat as a universal browser. Files can be downloaded via the web and viewed page by page, provided the user's computer has the necessary software (Acrobat reader).

Perl [Practical Extraction and Report Language]
Perl is a server-side, interpreted language that provides much of the web's interactivity.

Pixel
Refers to how monitors divide the display screen into thousands or millions of individual dots to display an image. A pixel is one dot. Also used for physical size and resolution (pixels per inch) of graphic files.

PHP
Abbreviation for Hypertext Pre-Processor. A server-side, HTML embedded scripting language used to create dynamic Web pages. Designed for Windows and Unix type platforms.

Plug-In
A software extension that provides added capabilities to the browser, for purposes such as viewing, hearing, or saving specially formatted files. Most plug-ins are available via the creator's web page for downloading.

POP
Post Office Protocol - A method of storing and returning email.

Post
A post is a single message sent to a newsgroup or message board.

Protocol
A formal set of conventions that allow communication between two functional units. It is a language that computers use to talk to each other. There are many such languages. Most popular is TCP/IP used officially on the Internet.

Quick Time Video
Quick Time Video is the Apple technology that allows video, digitized sound and music, 3D, and virtual reality to be viewed on your web site. It's available for Macintosh and Windows-based computers.

Ranking
Order of ranking (i.e., 1 being the highest) that a web site is shown for a specific search term in a specific search engine. Search Engines utilize a ranking algorithm (mathematical formulas, variables, and set of weights) to determine a site's ranking for a particular keyword or keyword phrase.

Resolution
The resolution of an image describes how fine the dots are that make up that image. The more dots (per inch, for example), the higher the resolution. When displayed on a monitor, the dots are called pixels.

Rich media
Typically, a web site or banner ads that use technology more advanced than standard GIF animation.

Royalty-Free Photos or Images
Photos, graphic or other intellectual property that are sold for a single fee and may be used repeatedly by the purchaser. With royalty-free clauses, the company that sells you the images still owns all of the rights to the images, and they are allowed for use only by the purchaser.

Search Engine
A search engines is a program that searches documents (web pages) in its database for specified keywords and returns the list of links to those documents that it considers relevent.

A search engine can have two parts, a spider and an indexer. The spider is the program that fetches the documents, and the indexer reads the documents and creates an index (database) based on the words or ideas contained in each document.

Search Engine Optimization
You add title, appropriate keywords and phrases; and arrange the words and phrases in the web page body in such a way that when a search engine search the results for a particular search terms, your web page come out at a higher rank. Thus the greater chance to get more visitors.

The way search engines search are not the same. Some search engines actually store (index) the words they find on the web pages discarding the meta tags. Some engines pay importance on meta tags, but the relationship between meta tags and the words on the web page body also is calculated. Title of a web page could be considered one of the most important words.

Spam
The act of blindly sending commercial messages or advertisements to email users or posting to newsgroups.

Spider/Robot
A software program that search engines use when visiting web sites on the web, follows all of the links (that it is able to follow), and catalogs the texts it finds on the pages.

SSI [Server-Side Includes]
Tells a server to include information (source from a separate file) in a document before sending it to the browser. A very effective method of producing the same information over many pages as one file can be altered to produce the changes over many pages that include the SSI file.

Sub-Domain (Name)
A sub-domain is a domain that is part of a larger domain name. DNS hierarchy consists of the root-level domain at the top, underneath which are the top-level domains, followed by second-level domains and finally sub-domains.

Submission Forms (feed-back forms)
Forms are web pages with fields for a user to fill in with information. They are an excellent way of collecting and processing information from people visiting a website, as well as allowing them to interact with web pages. Forms are written in HTML and processed by CGI programs. The output can be sent as an e-mail form, stored online, printed, and/or returned to the user as an HTML page.

Traffic
Similar to a traffic on a road; traffic is a measurement of the amount of users that visit a Web site.

Upload
To copy a file from a local computer connected to the Internet to a remote computer. Opposite is download

URL
Uniform Resource Locator and is an address referring to a document on the Internet. The syntax of a URL consists of three elements:
- the protocol, or the communication language, that the URL uses;
- the domain name, or the exclusive name that identifies a web site; and
- the path name of the file to be retrieved, usually an HTML document.

For example, the URL for a home page is commonly written as:

http://www.name.com/index.html

The http:// is the protocol.
The www.name.com is the domain name.
The index.html is the path name.

Usability
Level or degree of a page's operating friendliness for the user.

Validation
Validation is a way to make sure that your (HTML) code is compliant with current HTML specifications.

W3C [World Wide Web Consortium]
Established in October 1994 to lead the World Wide Web to its full potential by developing common protocols that promote its evolution and ensure its interoperability.

WAN
Wide Area Network - A system of connected computers spanning a large geographical area.

Web Based E-mail
Web based e-mail is a software on a POP3 server that allows you to access your POP accounts by simply using a web-browser. It allows users to send and receive emails via any web-browser by viewing an HTML web page. For example hotmail.

Web page
One of the pages on the web site including home page.

Web site
A web site is a collection of web pages generally formatted in HTML that could contain text, graphic images, and multimedia effects, and other programming elements such as Java and JavaScript.

WWW [World Wide Web]
A way of accessing information over the medium of the Internet. Browsers, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape are utilized to access the vast collection of interconnected (hyperlinked) documents on the web.

Or a system of Internet servers that support specially formatted documents. The documents are formatted in HTML that supports links to other documents, as well as graphics, audio, and video files.
