Two colours river in Umphang, Tak province.
When Klotho stream enters Mae Klong river below (to the south of) Ban Palatha Karen village two colors of waters mix and form a fatter Mae Klong river that flows further down south between mountains and more streams coming in like waterfalls.
October 2007 - Two colors river of Umphang
When talking about two color rivers most people remember the place in Ubon Ratchathani province where Moon river flows into Mekong river at Thai - Laos border creating two colours of water bodies.
However the point where Klotho stream, after forming Thailand's largest Thilorsu waterfall and Kotha waterfall, drains into Mae Klong river the difference between the two colors is sharper than in Ubon Ratchathani. The murkier water of mae Klong and clearer water of Klotho mix to form a larger Mae Klong river.
The Mae Klong then continues to flow down south. On the way it is filled by many more streams including Thi Lor Lay waterfall (a mountain stream that comes out of rocks and drops into Mae Klong), Mae Chan river (that orginates in the Thailand - Myanmar border hills) and finally flows into Sri Nakharin dam lake in Kanchanaburi province. At the downstream of the dam the river is called Kwai Yai. After combining with Kwai Noi river just before Kanchanaburi town it is named again as Mae Klong river that finally drains into the Gulf of Thailand in Samut Songkhran province.
Ban Palatha (Karen) village could be reached in half hour by paved car road from Umphang town. From the village you have to walk alogn the river to the meeting point. Crossing the river to the other side is by swimming or building bamboo raft.
