TOUR 2: Kaeng Krachan - Doi Phanoen Thung trek

10 March 2009 update
Due to our other trips and research works, after the last trip in January 2009, there will not be trips in this national park until further notice. Please look around for other possible places to trek and email to us if you are after a good nature walk and camping or mountain village stay somewhere in Thailand and Laos.

Optional changes to the trip plan
  • The trip could be extended to include hiking to Thor Thip waterfall, camp there a night and walk back to km 30 Phanoen Thung camp (or to km 36 the end of the road) to take a truck to Petchaburi and then to Bangkok. That is, the trip will be altogether 3 nights and 3 days. Friday evening meet at southern bus terminal in Bangkok (or victory monument to take a van). Overnight in a guesthouse near the park. Saturday morning use a pick up truck to km 30 and start trekking to the peak where we camp. On Sunday walk to Thor Thip waterfall for second camp. Monday walk to the road, truck to Petchaburi and by van to Bangkok arriving at night.
  • The end of the road to Petchaburi river, and to Tor Thip waterfall and back to the road (2 or 3 days)
  • Phanoen Thung camp (km 30) to Mae Saleang waterfall, bird watching camp and to the road at Ban Krang (3 days)
17 May 2006
With the early arrival of the rainy season, though no heavy shower yet, we can now hike this trail and pick water from the canals for boiling. However there are leeches on some sections of the trail. People should use leech socks. Trekking is a bit more difficult now.

28 Mar 2006
On the previous hike of 8000 meters trail on 25 and 26 March 2006 to the summit there were no water along the route. At about 2 km to the summit we walked down into a valley following a stream bed for almost one kilometer just to find a small pool to pick water. At the summit we boiled the water for drinking and cooking.

This trip may not be run from now until the streams are with flowing water again (July). Note in the wet season there will be leeches on the ground and people must wear leech socks and prepare against getting wet.

09 March 2006
This 2 nights trip (Friday evening to Sunday evening) is planned for 24 - 26 March 2006.
