National parks in the North

Pa Mae Puem National Park

Pa Mae Puem park is located in two northern most provinces of Thailand: Chiang Rai and Phayao. The park covers areas of Don Pui and Par Hui forest reserves in Chiang Rai; Mae Puem, Dong Pra Du, Mae Hong Por and Hui Kaew forest reserves in Phayao.

The 356 square kilometers park consists of rugged hills running north-south ranging in elevation from 400 to more than 900 meters above sea level. The land is the head waters of Mae Kaew river in Chiang Rai, and Hui Mae Puem in Phayao.

The area receives south-west moonsoon in the rainy season, May to October, and north-east moonsoon in winter, November to January. Average temperature in December has been 9 to 10º C.

Mae Puem dam is located about 22 km north of Phayao city. About 5000 rai or 8 square kilometers lake behind the dam is a good place for a picnic. Top of Doi Ngam mountain is a 800 meters high plateau similar to Phukradung in Loei province of north-east Thailand. The highest peak in the park is Mae Puem at 978 meters above sea level.
